Two days ago, I wrote my 50,000th word toward a new novel. It was only the 14th, but I was really flying, with my characters thought about and my outline done.
So, big celebration! Woohooooooo!
I think I'm 3/4ths of the way through and since I hit 50K, I've been... well.... not writing.
OK, so I spent some time with the toddler today when I would usually have been trying to concentrate. I picked up the dang toys from all over the room that I'm working in (we have a LOT of toys). I read and commented on some chapters for my critique partner and have started revising a draft that she commented on for me (and realized that I managed to give her an older version - which I can't even find in my computer now, so where did THAT come from???)
I also have to get on DS1's case more, because he's way, way behind in the home practice for his karate black belt. Way. Way. Way.
And then, my characters have to spend another week in a carriage and go to the Paris region, where they have to find out if Helene's family are the ones who are trying to kill her. (SPOILER: They're not, really, but they're the key. And it wouldn't really bother them if she croaked)

birthday again
My physical state, this time.
I've never been thin. I've always been tall. We have "The Picture" at my parents' house that shows me and my brother romping in the sprinkler. I'm probably five and my brother's probably seven. I'm about the same height he is and I have a round belly. His ribs are showing. No, I wasn't stealing his food and we went out and played a lot, probably as much as each other.
He was short and thin and picked on until he was sixteen or so, when he finally shot up and was tall and skinny. But those are his issues, not mine. Well, they are sort of because though there are 2 years and 5 days between us, people sometimes thought we were twins.
Anyway, I look at pictures of myself from when I was 10 or 11 and I have a round belly and I was already 5'8" and taller than all but one boy in my class. I was on a sort of modified weight watchers (my mom was pushing fruits and vegetables, but not putting me on a diet, really). By the end of junior high, i was still taller than all but that one boy, but was built a bit more like a woman. By high school, the boys started catching up, but i was still terribly awkward about my height and weight.
Oh, and I played a sport every season in junior high. I wasn't very good and was slow, but it was a small school and I was tall, so was 1st string basketball and volleyball and even track (though I was better at the shot put and discus than at running). We lost a lot.
I look at those high school pictures and yeah, I had a big butt and thighs, but really, i was in a size 12 or 14 or so. Yeah, that's enormous by supermodel standards, but for someone who's 5'9" and has a large bone structure (honestly, I do - broad shoulders help project that mannish look - I didn't wear shoulder pads in the 80's because i would have looked like a linebacker), it's pretty good. Seriously, if I were rail thin, my shoulders would still be in a size 12, my pelvis in a 12 too, most likely. It's never going to happen.
So then college and grad school were all up and down, depending on how much exercise I was getting. And I didn't exercise unless I HAD to, like walking to the bus stop or whatever.
And grad school, I felt pretty good about how I looked. And then up and down some more and then when I got married, we had been walking a lot and swimming laps once or twice a week, so i was pretty hot :)
Basically, since then, it has been up and down. I wouldn't quite call it yo-yo dieting, just yo-yo living, because it's been rare that I have considered myself to be on a diet.
I gained 60 pounds or more with my first two kids, lost it between the two boys by eating less and exercising more, lost most of it after DS2 and then gained it back and forth for a bit. I started this latest pregnancy already really overweight, so managed to not gain 60 pounds. And then I had the baby and, well, the weight just hasn't been coming off.
I finally found a sport that I can do to my own level, karate, and yet I've been getting bored with it lately and can't get there in the evenings because of DH's schedule. And my favorite instructor left and it's just not so fun. AND then on top of that, it hasn't been enough to get me really fit. But if I don't go to karate, if I don't have a time and place that I have to be there, I don't exercise much at all. so I've signed up for Curves and am exercising with the older crowd. I am worried that I am going to get bored with the same workout all the time.
But karate makes me feel strong and capable. Pumping a machine for 30 seconds at a time just doesn't come off as very practical.
So anyway, like so many women (and men too) before me, I look at my teenage body and think, wow, I should have appreciated it when I had it. And I know that even if I weighed the same now, it's all shifted and sagged and all that and I wouldn't look that good now.

general catching up
I keep throwing little bitty updates on facebook and not much on here. Well, not a lot to say, except that the baby's not napping like I think she should. She was alllll worn out this morning and then napped for, oh, half an hour. I had squirted toilet cleaner in the toilet and turned on the computer and that was about it. When she got up, I had to make DH watch her (hooray for daddy who works at home) and go scrub the toilet -the sink will have to wait for another time. I also went out and tried again to spray the aphids and scale insects off the bushes they are killing and the rosebushes that just look a bit tired, not dying (yet). I should have trimmed the rosebushes in the winter, they are HUGE and flopping over. Gorgeous roses right now, though!
I need to test the lawn sprinklers and set the timer thing so they'll keep the lawn alive. The grass is starting to look tired and we are supposed to keep it greenish. I will wait until the boys are home, because sprinkler jumping is their favorie sport. I wish I could find DS2's swim trunks. Anyone have any ideas? His room's more or less picked up, but that means stuff shoved in the closet, so it might be there....
I still haven't downloaded the pictures from my camera. I still haven';t opened the box with all the junior high pictures in it and started scanning, either. The scanner and camera only work with one partition of one of our computers and I never seem to be in it. When I am not goofing off on the internet, I am on my laptop, trying to write.
I need new sandals. My Birkenstocks are just a bit older than DS2, so they'll turn 7 this year. The sole's been replaced twice, but now I think they are a lost cause, good for schlepping around the house and yard. The leather straps are fine, but the cork is deteriorating. I think I'm going to get something a bit strappier than the huge, basic black clunky things. Still Birkenstocks, though. I love my Birks! My inner hippie and all that. Well, I'm pretty much hippie all the way through. Revolution Breeze is my hippie name, according to the quiz on facebook.
I never noticed before, but I can sign my blog up to show google ads. With my vast readership, I should make a mint! What are we going to do with a buck fifty? (Mom will get the nuances of that....)
Oh, and I've been thinking of dropping karate. I like it when I get there, but it's only at an awkward time in the evening and DH seems to be going to more meetings and conferences and stuff. I'll miss kicking the C*** out of the wavemaster, though. Sigh. Decisions, decisions. I also feel like I should keep going this month, because we are making DS2 go until the end of his 6 month contract before deciding if he will quit. He took a break and any new person (or returning person) has to sign up for 6 months. His concept of time is shaky, so I don't know if it's really fair, but maybe I should keep going, too.
I've been thinking about it for a bit now and today on the way to the hardware store, instead of going into the donut shop, I went into Curves. They're doing a study right now, so the introductory rate is very low. If Dh is going to be at home, then I might as well lumber him with the baby for a half hour a few times a week (more like an hour+ especially if I walk there - it's not far) and actually get some exercise. It's more flexible, which is good, but that's also not good, because then I can keep putting off going. We'll see.
OK, the baby's saying "uh-ohhhhhh" and DH is wandering around talking on his cell phone. Back to being a mom...

On Ohio and dial-up and other stuff
We're here in Ohio and the weather is... Ohio-ish. We've had a few gorgeous, warm days and DS2 informed me that it's not cold here and what was I talking about when I had them pack long pants, anyway? And then there have been days like today where it's maybe 45 and rainy and DS2 is wearing three shirts, 2 pairsof pants, 2 pairs of socks and a fleece and is still frozen solid after 5 minutes. This morning, the rain was definitely snow-like. Oh, and there was a thunder storm last night and they were having tornadoes just across the Indiana border (which my dad was more mad about because they kept interrupting the golf on TV, not because the storm could veer toward us and we could get blown off the face of the earth or even altruistic notions of worrying about the people in Indiana).
They test the tornado sirens every Wednesday for just a couple of seconds, except the first Weds of the month, when it runs for a couple of minutes. Woooooo the excitement last week!
I have seen a lot of my sister and her family. My mom is still taking care of her kids while she's on maternity leave, so I've seen even more of her kids than I have of her. All the cousins are enjoying each other, mostly, though the honeyoon periodis sort of wearing off. And DS2 seems to be stealing Nephew1's next-door neighbor girlfriend. OK, not really, but he's the same age she is and they're having fun playing together in a 6 1/2 year old way insteasd of a 5 year-old way. Though DS1 and Nephew1 have also played the run-and-hide-from-the-other-kid game, which the neighbor girl discovered isn't as much fun when they're running from you as when you're running from your little sister.
I had dinner last night with a friend from high school that I hadn't seen in ages and ages except once in passing when she was working in a retail store here in town (that has since closed along the vast quantities of dead retail space around where Walmart used to be before it moved just out of town so it wouldn't have to pay city taxes while it ruined the rest of the city's economy). Anyway, she's working as an accountant at the university and taking computer classes and looks good (Hi Liz!). And she had just run into another old friend from high school that neither of us had seen in ages and ages and so she stopped by for a while and we exchanged email addresses (Hi Taff!).
And Peggy's supposed to be calling me... (Hi Peggy!)
It has been a nice visit and I'm starting to get ready to go home. I want to live closer, but I don't think I could actually live here in this town again. Well, I suppose I could because it's a great town, but outside of the university, there aren't so very many jobs around and there isn't a whole lot that's family-oriented, like anywhere at all to take kids to play indoors if the weather is bad, unless you go to the university's Rec center.
I made shorter sticks out of a big bamboo pole my mom had and DS1 and I have practiced his stick techniques a few times. We need to pratcice some more and I should call the karate school to ask if we're doing it right and what else he's supposed to know for the belt test he needs to do the week we get back. I think it was mostly review, but we should, well, review it, before we go back. And now I know the stick work, too, and someday whe I am a big advanced belt like him, I will already have done it. Yay me!
DD is thrilled to have a ride-in Playskool car to get into and out of and into and out of. And then drive backwards in a circle and high sppeds until it swerves a bit and she runs into something and then gets frustrated because she's stuck because she can't figure out how to get it to go forward. I took a lovely little movie with my camera which I will post when we're back in California. She's not so thrilled by all the closed doors around here - closed so she doesn't fall down the stairs to the basement, closed so she doesn't all down the stairs to the garage, etc etc. She's very good at knocking and yelling.
Let's see.....
Those are the highlights. The fit-for-public-consumption highlights, at least.
And DH and I are going to go out to an Indian restaurant tonight. At least, I guess I should call to be sure it's open tonight, since it's Monday.
Oops, here comes my dad to tell me DD's awake.

I finished my book (again)
I was re-reading and editing my NaNo book and realized that I was nowhere close to being really done with tying up all the plot points, so I wrote a few more chapters and finally feel like I'm at the end now - finished today!
Lots of editing yet to be done and adding to stuff and deleting other stuff, but I feel more like it's getting somewhere. I started reading through it again, too, and cut out some big chunks of useless stuff.
I really need to make some notes for myself on themes that need to be worked out better in different places.
Karate belt promotion tonight. I'm going to be a blue belt, which is the top of the intermediate class. Just 4 more months and I'll be a red belt and advanced! We're going to be gone for part of the next cycle, so I'm not sure DS1 will know the stuff well enough to promote to advanced red, but I think we'll ask for some private lessons over the next 2 weeks so he and I can learn his stuff so I can help him with it when we're gone. We might bring the sticks to Granny's house, which could be a good time....

balloons and crunchy muscles
We had an extra balloon from DS1's birthday party (totally forgot to make sure the first two kids who left got balloons!) so it's the baby's. The boys have tucked the weight into the back of her pants, so she's crawling around with big smiley face floating 6 or so feet above her.
And I stood up and stretched and my belly hurts. I went to karate on Friday night and the man who is the instructor Fridays has made it "Fitness Friday". The last few times I had gone, there was a huge pack of 16 year old black belt boys with infinite energy and extra sass and I was collapsing and we never went over the curriculum stuff that I usually needed help with, so I was avoiding the Friday class. This time, there were lower belts and was mostly young women, though they were all still younger than me and had boundless energy. Anyway, we did do curriculum for this cycle, but we did lots of jogging and lots of 'crunchies' which is why I said to the boys that my crunchy muscles are sore.

Well, since I'm going to be up late anyway...
DD's two mini naps this morning and early afternoon were not very effective in making her a happy camper. So after karate, I lay down with her and she went to sleep for a couple of hours and she got up at..... almost 7 PM. Yeah, we're not going to bed tonight, it's a partayyyyyyy.
I should have made dinner early or else eaten just a little because the timing was right for me to go to karate and yet I didn't because my belly was full.
I am thinking of taking DD over to the karate dojo for the end of what would have been my class time because my favorite instructor is only there a couple of evenings a week and always asks about her.

Lots of random stuff
Need to get to work on binding a quilt.
Hoping DS1's presentation on the Miwok Native Californians went well. It took some doing to get him to organize his thoughts and get them written out for his presentation. I ended up typing it into the computer for him.
Wondering what brown clothes we have around for DS2's star turn as a beaver next week.
Finished about 8 dozen chocolate cherry cookies for a cookie exchange. Oh they're good! About 20 left for the family, even after I ate the ones that were the worst disasters...
Wondering what sort of odd person would be sure to send Facebook Lil Green Patch plants to an old friend's wife whom I only knew slightly back in high school. I mean, am I worried that I am going to make her jealous by sending her DH, whom I haven't seen in.... 15 years or so, a cyber poinsettia and not sending her one?
Read The Greatest Thing Since Sliced Bread a couple of days ago. It was really good and I'd recommend it, especially to my NE Ohio friends, because it takes place in Cleveland. Am currently attempting to read a biography of Louis Pasteur. The plot's a bit thin, all telling instead of showing...
Went to karate last night. I don't usually go on Tuesday because the class starts at 8 and ends at 9, but I'm glad I did because I got to see some of my advanced belt friends that I started with back 18+ months ago. I'm still intermediate because of that little baby thing, so don't always get to see them. J's creating manga now, K's recovered from surgery, D's been out of town on business, so doesn't know four-count, though he pretty much mastered it just last night and it's taken me 4 weeks. We lowly beginners and intermediates had our curriculum down pat, so the instructor started us on Doce Pares #1 (with sticks) for when we do make it to advanced. I made Sempai A. teach me the 5-count bridge section that DS1 keeps doing the same as the 6-count, so now I can help him get it down by next week, though I'm still not positive about the foot work. And hey, I didn't even fall down last night. Almost did on the spin sidekick, but I just wobbled a bit.
ETA: Forgot to say that I got a call from the school yesterday. I won the parking space raffle! They earn extra money for the school by selling raffle tickets each month to use the best spot in the parking lot. So now I'll have a place to park throughout the various Winter Performances and all the way through January. Yeah parking. Such a Californian thing to get stoked about!

Made it to karate
Just barely, and was a bit late due to breastfeeding DD to sleep, so missed part of the warm up.
Me and a bunch of 16 year olds - including the instructor this morning. Who wants to partner with the old fart?
But hey, I feel better and like I've had some exercise and lots of kicking and punching in our curriculum this time, so adrenaline and stress relief all around. But why do I keep doing #8 of basic blocking set wrong? It's like I can't get my left arm to go in the right direction on that one. But intermediate striking set? WHAM WHAM WHAM WHAM! Four count? WHAM WHAM thunk WHAM! (the thunk is my sorry excuse for a hook punch)
I tried to watch the advanced belts do their escrima thing because ds1 doesn't have the transitional middle part of it down, but I didn't see what they were doing. I guess he'll learn it this coming week.

So... tired...
I need to get my blood moving a bit, but I ma just so tired this morning. DD has been waking up every 2 or 3 hours every night for the last few (one of her FOUR top teeth that are on the verge if breaking through has broken through halfway). I also have a mild cold, so my head hurts and my nose is leaking.
I stayed up a bit late to finish reading The Unfortunate Miss Fortunes (by Crusie, Stuart, and Dreyer) for the second time. It still just doesn't gel together, but I think I liked it a little better. When it first came out last year, I was whooping and thinking this was going to be great and then it wasn't so much. Anyway, it's good, but three main characters and their main squeezes ends up being a bit too many, I think. And it's a novel by three people, not an anthology of short stories. I like Crusie's work with Bob Meyer because it is one man and one woman as main characters and you can really get invested in the romance aspect while all the people are going around shooting and hitting each other with frying pans and being eaten by alligators and such.
So anyway, I need to drink my coffee and get moving a little before 10 when I have to go to karate. That'll get my blood moving, yes, but I'm not even going to make it out of the house feeling like I do.

groooooan
I went to karate last night. It's killing me this cycle because a couple of our moves involve dropping your opponent on the floor, which means that we work with partners and get dropped as much as we drop them. One of the moves involves pinning your partner's arm to your chest, grabbing them by the back of the neck and spinning them around and down to the floor.
Which is just wrong on so many levels.
My partner last night was K, who was a belt ahead of me when I started and who now is about 3 belts ahead due to my maternity leave. She's about my age. Neither of us is as spry as we used to be, so the necks, backs, and shoulders were aching and getting up off the floor was getting harder and harder.
And a 16/17 year old black belt (nice enough kid, just very young) had the nerve to tell us before class when we were griping to each other about aches and pains, "You're not old!" OK, so we're not 60 or 70 or 80, but 40-ish with back problems is a bit older than 17, dahling.
Renshi M, the director of the center and a good guy was making all of us do push ups with our feet up on the base of the Wavemaster which means they were about 18 inches off the ground. Let's just say that I didn't even do ONE. I don't know if anyone else had to other than me, but he said that if we couldn't do it, to put our knees down.
We were also doing sit ups with our feet up there and were supposed to be touching the bag as high up as we could. Well, I could almost touch the bag. Not quite. Unnnng.

stuff and grammar
dh is out for the 2nd dinnertime in a row.
he was supposed to be home by 6 yesterday so i could go to karate, but he came in at 7:30 or so. i could have gone to the higher-level class at 8, but that's such a stinky time to be out, for my own sake and that of the kidlets (and dh who's left holding the baby). but i really need to get to class twice a week, which i don't always manage, so i'm going to try for the all-level 8 pm class tonight.
DD has been nursing like crazy the last few days, apparently to make up for not eating as much when the cold was bad. she's pretty cranky and tired right now; she took a good nap this morning, but has only done a mini-nap since then. we didn't sleep very well last night, so i'm a bit worn out, too.
i got all my paperwork for driving on ds2's field trip. this meant i spent 45 minutes waiting in the dmv for someone to hit "print" and take $5 from me. while people who came in after me got waited on first. there's this system of letters and numbers and i have no idea what letters mean what. but note to the dmv people: if you're going to take someone out of turn, choose someone unobtrusive, not the 6'4" guy with a mohawk. (and me sitting there humming 80's punk/alt music)
Grammar question: "...and get all your paper work turned into the office before Friday." So IMO, there are enough spaces, just not in the right places. Is it just me or are there way too many people who always write in to and on to as one word? (one word each, i mean) even when it's wrong? and now i've seen it wrong so many times that i can't explain why.
though who am i to talk, since i'm typing without capitals (left-handed with a baby nursing. gold medalist in the mom olympics thankyouverymuch.)

Hiiiii-ya!
We had belt promotions last night. I'm a green belt now, which is the 4th belt and the second one in the intermediate class. DS1 is a blue belt, 2 ahead of me and also the last rank that is in the intermediate class. In a bit under 4 months, he'll be moving to red belt, which is the advanced class.
DD is a black belt :)

I was going to take some pictures of all of us together, but forgot my camera in the mad rush to barely get there on time for DS1's belt ceremony. Got lots of praise and cooing and funny remarks from people there about her gi. I was going to give her a white belt at first, then thought about using green or blue since that's what we were moving to, but decided that black would get more notice. That shirt's not going to still fit her by the next time we promote. Well, unless DS2 goes back and then he should promote in about a month.
Pants were sweat pants from ottobre - you can't see it, but there's wide gray ribbing at the waist. The shirt was from http://babypatterns.atspace.com/overview.html - the yellow wrap shirt in 3-6 months. I had a heck of a time trying to get it to print out as big as it's supposed to be, plus it's probably supposed to be knit instead of unstretchable woven, so it was a bit tight.
She managed to not melt down, though the whole thing (2 ceremonies) lasted over 1 1/2 hours and when she was getting fussy was when I was out there doing my karate stuff and getting my belt so I couldn't just stop and nurse her.
DS2, on the other hand.... well, he didn't melt down, but as soon as we got there - IMMEDIATELY after eating dinner of which he didn't eat much because he wasn't hungry - he went to the snack table and proceeded to graze for 1 1/2 hours. Don't we feed him?
And then DS1 sat and read a comic book throughout my belt promotion. Now why did I drag the whole family along again?

another saturday
1 handed typoing, so that typo there is more accurate than usual. dd's almost asleep while nursing on my lap, but i need to go to the store at some point.
i went to karate this am because i hadnt gone all week. i like saturday classes, i think. except when ms. p teaches them because she makes us do stuff like jump rope and pretty soon i start wheezing. anyway, it was renshi M today and he's my favorite. i got my black tip so at the end of this coming cycle i can test for my next belt. woot!
we've been socked in with forest fire smoke for most of the week and the kids are bouncing off the wall. we've been going to swim lessons, but by the end, my chest hurts from smoke and i'm not even the one exerting myself. i ran in to some old LLL friends when we were playing on the climbing thing after the boys' lesson and before their kids' lesson. it's wild to see how big they get so fast.
ds1 says he woke up at 5 this am. he's silly and goofy and tends to fly out of control when he's tired. oh joy.
but the smoke isn't as thick today - or at least it's not as close to the ground because the sky is still mostly gray - so we are trying to get the boys outside. being outside has lasted about a minute so far. augh!

Lazy(-ish) Saturday
Lazy except that DS1 and I went to karate this morning. We had only been once this week. It was a good workout. I'm finally getting the hang of the stick defenses we're doing, though if anyone ever really attacked me with a number4, I might not survive. Well, with 3 or 5, either, unless they really telegraphed it. OK, so I've only really got 1 and 2, OK? Don't rub it in.
DS2 wants to drop out of karate for a while, which is too bad. Well, it's better that he take a break than we continue to struggle with getting him there and getting his uniform on him once he's there. Unfortunately, I bought the padded weapon, gloves, and shin guards last week and wrote his name on them in silver Sharpie, so I can't return them. I need some for myself, so it would be great if I could trade them, but anyway.
DD is asleep, which took a couple of tries, but now that she's down, she's out for the count.
I've been reading a couple of reference works on life in Victorian England. What Jane Austen Ate and Charles Dickens Knew is good, but I'm really loving Inside the Victorian Home by Judith Flanders for all its detail, even though what I am writing is an attempt at blurring the line between the peerage and the middle class and the book is all about the middle class. I have a book out on women's clothing, too, and am trying to picture what my characters would be wearing in about 1840 or so.
Right DD's awake so I need to go.

Tuesday in the afternoon
Karate again last night. I'm just soooo tired by the end of it and the hip joint I keep tweaking is very stiff. I'll keep going for this month, then I have a hard decision to make. We jogged at the beginning of class as part of our warm up, then ran up and down doing high knees, etc. I was wheezing and was holding up everyone behind me, but I wasn't ready to collapse, so maybe there's hope for me.
On the up side, I was in class last night with the geek brothers that I started with way back last year. They're a couple of belts ahead of me now and still enthusiastic, though the one that was way over-enthusiastic is calming down a bit (though both he and the youngest brother have ruined their padded weapons by hitting each other so hard). Nice, nice young men (even if they hit each other a bit too enthusiastically). Plus, they don't hit like girls. Whoops, did I really say that? I know that the oldest of them (20-ish) was not hitting me as hard as he hits his brothers when we were practicing sparring, but he wasn't all namby-pamby and I knew he could take it if I did more then brushed him with my padded weapon. (pause here while I search my own archives for my first mention of geek boys... here's a good one, though I completely overestimated their ages)
DH has the car - he had a lunch meeting of some sort, then he'll pick up the big boys and he has one more stop to make before he comes home, so it'll be 4 or later until I see anyone other than DD.
I wanted to go to the library and I think it's open later tonight, so I might still get the chance. I have, um, 16 or so books that I requested waiting for me. I still have 12 books checked out and all of them have been renewed at least once or else are due within the next couple of days.
I've stalled on the book I am writing. The people I intended to be the hero and heroine are not getting together. The hero might be gay and the heroine is mourning her late husband and won't get over him for a while, plus she has a new baby, which is not the most romantic time in one's life, at least in my experience. The sister is falling for a guy, but he's more interested in the woman I thought was the heroine. Basically, it's not a romance novel as it started out, so what is it, who knows. I don't think there's enough mystery involved to make it a mystery. It might just be cr*p. Or an historical novel with romantic elements, as they say. Which is probably more to my taste anyway. But in that case, I would have to do a lot better with historical accuracy. Research. Sigh.

kiiii-ya *whoops*
I went to karate again yesterday. Can I just say how humiliating it is when you have to race against a bunch of 16 year old black belts? And they are all the way down the mat and halfway back doing a bear crawl when you're about 10 feet out, thinking you're going to fall on your face? At least I didn't stumble and fall on my tush like I did the other night on my first night back, which reminded of my first day ever when we were learning kicks on the bag and I lost my balance and fell on my tush. It's sort of a theme for me.
Fall down seven times, get up eight.
I did yank the sore hip joint when we were practicing kicks, but it wasn't too bad and I walked it off.
I have a bunch of subplots and scenes cooking for my book and some suggestions from my writing group, including playing up the mystery angle. So I've been daydreaming it instead of writing it over the last couple of days. Better get busy...

Wednesday already?
The concert last night was sweet. Short, too ;) DS2 waved his orange map and remembered his line. DD fussed some, so I was in and out for most of the classes. One of the classes was singing "It's a Wonderful World" and she hit her cue nicely on the "I hear babies cry" line :)
We got home a bit before 7:30 and DD had sacked out in the car, so I put on my gi and went to karate. I have never, ever been this out shape in my life. Whhhooooo. But we did a lot of stuff, much of which was still familiar from last year and it was certainly a good workout. I partnered with a little teenage girl for part of the time and she wasn't very serious about it. I'll have to find out which nights all my old buddies are going so I can really work. I mean, once I am vaguely ready and in shape... I'm only moderately sore today, though I am a bit dehydrated.
I snapped off the end of one of my big toenails when kneeling down on the mat. Owwwwwww. It's only a little ways down into the quick and only bled a little. But Ewwwwww.
Also, I pulled into the drive at about 9:15 and DD had apparently been awake and complaining for about an hour. DS2 was cross that he didn't get a book last night because Daddy was carrying DD around, poor lad. So if there's anything that keeps me from going back to karate for real, I guess it will be the sanity of everyone who has to listen to DD cry when I'm not there to feed her. Maybe I will try out the 6:30 class.
DD hasn't been sleeping as well lately. She's shortened her sleep times to 4 hours or so maximum. I'm hoping it's a short phase, but remember that the boys' sleep patterns changed at about 3 or 4 months and they didn't sleep through again until they were over a year old. Sigh.
She really is a gorgeous baby - she's very alert and strong and loves to chat. She is already exploring her voice and we sometimes exchange shrieky sounds. I'm trying to get her to do it on cue while I sing "I Feel Good", but I guess she's more a Louis Armstrong type of girl and not so much James Brown.

with or without slings
Yesterday, we walked to the birthday party - it's less than a mile, mostly flat, etc. But between that and holding DD in the sling for most of the party, my upper back today is really sore.
So I got to the grocery store today and realized that I didn't have the shopping list AND I didn't have the sling. DD rode in one of those hard plastic baby seat carts. She thought it was great for the first bit, but she was getting grumpy by the end anyway, then we rolled out into the parking lot and her little head was bouncing on the hard plastic. But she fell asleep in her car seat and is still snoozing away 2 hours later.
I'm going to start karate tonight. I have a pulled muscle in my left hip joint that I keep re-pulling, so I might only make it this one time. We'll see. Which reminds me that I need to find my belt.

I'm going to start karate tonight. I have a pulled muscle in my left hip joint that I keep re-pulling, so I might only make it this one time. We'll see. Which reminds me that I need to find my belt.

more blablabla
i am typing with one hand, ignoring capital letters and misspelling all over the place - thank goodness for auto spell check that underlines misspelled words for me. at least i am back to holding her with my left hand and typing with my right.
i've been on the computer off and on for quite a bit now. DD keeps wanting to eat and fall asleep in my lap. she took a good, long nap alone earlier (which is why i was getting somewhere on the quilt), but she wasn't letting me put her down again.
the boys are home - DH got them from school and took them to karate. i forgot that it was "bring your mom to class" day and dh wanted to do a couple of errands on the way to get them so i didn't go. i think they're doing it tomorrow, too actually.
i think DS2 is ready to take a break from karate - he at least needs a break from the classes right after school. he'll be in the intermediate class with DS1 in a few weeks, which makes it easier for us to take both boys at the same time, so we can go other days when there's a bit of a break between school and karate. but hey, if he wants a break that's fine. he was talking last week like he would not go except on days that they test for belts. um.... doesn't quite work like that. you kinda hafta know the moves before they test you.
DH and I are going out to eat, dragging the baby with us. MIL is babysitting and fixing the boys' supper. i will suggest leftover pizza and broccoli. we don't know where we're going yet. we had sushi last week and chinese on sunday, so we'll have to think of something else.
