Rockin' the ring sling!

storm saga

Doesn't that sound dramatic?

In reality, i went shopping for a bit yesterday morning - in and out of the car and stores, getting totally blasted by rain and wind to try to find some boots for the toddler. I should have gone straight to target, but didn't want to drive that far.

Then we went to get the boys from school and got totally soaked (me all over except where I had her in the sling, her only the end of her legs where she wasn't protected by the sling and the poncho.

Then out and in for the library, out and in for the copy shop, out and in for karate - back out to wander for a very short time to keep her busy during karate and back into karate and out and into the car.

Then we pulled up out front of the house and the garage door didn't open. The electricity was off.

And guess what? Dumbhead me had been thinking for MONTHS that I should put the side door key back on my key ring, but had I? Oh no. So we went to Round Table for dinner - and it was buffet night and the boys ate some salad. *faint from surprise*

And back home again and the electricity was back on. otherwise, we would have driven for about 45 minutes round trip to get DH's keys from him at his work.

Oh, and we had to go look at our old live Xmas tree that was growing so nicely out front, but which apparently hadn't put down enough roots and so is flopped over sideways and we're going to have to take it out. sad.

And by this time I was soaked to the skin about 5 times. I was almost over that cold, too. Oh well.

So we came in and rebooted DH's server and I turned my crock pot back on to finish cooking the lentils that I wasn't going to have for dinner and went around fixing the clocks (elec was out for just over 2 hours).

From there, it was just a matter of getting DS2 to finish his math homework (no spelling this week because today is the last day due to teacher work days) and general goofing off and normal evening stuff.

Oh, and today I went all the way to Target and got to choose between Hello Kitty and Optimus Prime (transformers) for DD's boots. I sighed and went with the cat. I also got her some cheap tennis shoes. poor love has only worn soft leather shoes so far and wouldn't even take a step in her new boots because they were weird and heavy. She was stumbling around in the shoes, but at least she could walk.

I got some cheap shirts from the baby and boys' clearance racks at Target, too. Nothing is DS2's size, but we can now hand down some shirts that were getting too small for DS1, I guess.

happy naps, sad naps, confused naps

Generally, The Toddler takes one nap a day. Far too frequently lately, though, she has taken a very very short nap at 10:30 or so and then wouldn't go back to sleep and then has screamed and shouted for a couple of hours and then finally settled down to a real nap, just in time to go get the boys from school.

Today, she managed to settle in at about 1:30, so she'll get about an hour before I have to put her in the car and then she won't go back to sleep and then she's going to be cranky this evening and DH is working onsite again today and didn't leave until noon or so and so won't be home until bedtime AGAIN.

When she's rested and fed, she's such a joy.

And when she was bad, she was horrid.

labor days and mondays alwayyyyyys get me dowwwwwn

Sorry. Not quite how the song goes, but hey, my brain works in wondrous ways.

I call earworm! Mouhahahhaha!

And besides, I'm not down, so never mind.

Anyway, I just spent a couple of hours playing UNO with my kids. MIL sent a Harry Potter UNO deck. The instructions were in 4 languages, none of them English. Good thing I'm mostly fluent in French, because it's been a long time since I played UNO and the cards don't have words like "skip" or "reverse" or whatever on them, they just have symbols so it took a little interpreting. So anyway, it's a good time. The toddler got up from her nap part way through and I fed her lunch while she watched us play. After that, it was a bit of a struggle to keep her off the table and from grabbing cards, but she finally wandered off to see what Daddy was doing.

We went to the grocery this morning at 9 am. We were out of milk. We got donuts and a bagel and ate before doing the rest of the shopping. They behaved pretty well, which isn't always a given, plus it wasn't crowded, which also helps with the behavior. Beef and bread for dinner tonight.

And that's about it.

I need to work my way through the next chapter here.

logging it in before I lose the paper

The baby went to the doctor last week (got one shot. Delayed MMR and chicken pox until maybe next time). Today, she almost made off with the tiny paper they wrote the weight, etc info on.

So here goes:

Weight: 21 LBS 11 oz (15-20%)
Height: 33 1/4 inches (90%)
Head: 18 1/2 inches (65-70%)

(HERE's the post from her last visit in May. Pretty much 1 lb and 1 inch since then.)

Yep. Still tall and skinny. Her head's gotten bigger in relation to her body.

She has a new sign. When we say something is stinky, she slaps her hand over her nose. She has lots of new signs, but this is my current favorite!

And the doctor commented on her new teeth, but he meant the eye teeth that are just coming in. I had only noticed they were red right next to the brand new molars. So 8 teeth in a month. Yay.

weekend rambling

Well, 2 minutes until bedtime here.

1st week of school is over and the weather looks like it's going to be slightly cooler over the next week. It'll be in the low 90's which is too hot to exert oneself and yet not hot enough that I want to puke as soon as I step outside.

I have 80 gradations of hot weather.

It's sort of like the 80 words for snow allegedly in some Eskimo dialect.

And my kids are earning their keep: DS1 (9 yo) mowed the front yard and DS2 tried to tidy up the raggedy pieces still sticking up when he was done.

DS1 has to go to karate tomorrow morning. I should exercise, too, because I only made it once this week so far.

OK. The toddler is squawking. She needs to go to bed.

teeth and more teeth

The toddler has all her first molars poking through. She's been working on them for a long, long time and they've all appeared within the last few days. (No, we haven't been sleeping well)

And DS1, who is 9 1/2 has just lost the last of his first molars.

So when they say the tooth fairy recycles teeth, I have to say that she very likely does.

oh yeah. the movie.

This is fairly tame. Not like the standing on the unprotected end and cannonballing times that make me think "Oh boy, she's gonna die."

Because Margaret commented that I didn't have any PICTURES on my blog

All of June here...

It's sad when a 9 1/2 year old forgets how to dress himself...

The tutu I made a few years ago as a half-hearted Halloween costume makes a lovely dress!

Playing with lego - yes she can stack them and take them apart. But why does she have to stand on a chair to do it?

DS1 putting on the brakes at the bottom of the slide - they wouldn't let him wear his goggles down so he didn't want to get his face wet.

Boys at their lesson

Deranged boy before a lesson

Contemplating getting on the table

See? I did plant some tomato plants! They're much bigger now, about a month later.

Happy hose girl

The boys had all the shoes out of the closet. Don't ask.

Want UP! NOW!

More shoe mayhem.

Foot mayhem this time.

more teeth!

Silly tooth fairy stilled hasn't showed...

But she'd better get here soon, because DD is apparently working on 4 teeth. Is that story about the TF using old teeth to make baby ones true?

DD's been working on them for a while, but she's been chewing on her fingers and tugging at her ears and having horrid poops and I'm hoping it's only teeth. I gave her a half dose of tylenol liquid and she calmed down some, but she's still majorly cranky. We've dragged her off the table and away from computers more than usual today, all with much screaming and yelling.

Oy, my head.

PICTURES

Backyard baseball! Not exactly ideal as far as diamonds go...

She wants up. Now.

Devil with a blue(berry) dress, blue(berry) dress on.

Being very sweet. Usually, she's up on the table.

We've taken almost everything out from under the sink because she eats it.

tummy bug

The baby is recovering nicely from her excessive poops.

It was a mild flu/tummy bug thing.

How do I know?

I have it now.

Urg.

Saturday chillaxin'

Let's see....

We managed to sleep until almost 8, then the boys came in at a bit before 8:30.

DS2 was trying to attack/wrestle DS1 over and over and even though I said that they needed to work it out or stop or DS1 needed to walk away, it took until DS1 finally clocked DS2, who promptly went berserker and I hauled him away screaming and flailing for it to end. They've been getting along well since then.

I woke DH up a bit after 10 so I could go work out. I feel refreshed.

I got back and DD wanted milkies and a nap, so I lay down with her and read a book (old Nora Roberts from a library book sale about 2 years ago that has been drifting in dust because I hadn't gotten around to it) and she went to sleep pretty quickly.

DD has had 3 dirty diapers today with nasty, runny poops. 2 days in a row. Icky and worrying, plus she screams and cries when we change her, presumably her bottom hurts or else she's tired of having her diaper changed.

We had sandwiches and some leftovers for lunch because I couldn't actually think of anything to make. I thought maybe pancakes, but DS2 has been asking for crepes lately, so I figured we could have those for dinner.

The boys are back at building their couch cushion house. I swear we have only kept the horribly decrepit love seat for the cushions. They keep helping the baby in and then she screams to get out and then she screams to get back in. Sigh.

And now.... Now, I am going to attempt to write at least 422 words, which will take me over my month's goal. If I am given a little space and quiet and my mind is functioning, I can do that much in less than half an hour. I was about to write that I could do it with one hand tied behind my back, but even though i have been typing one-handed for years due to baby feeding, I really am not very fast.

15th monthaversary (and general info type post)

How did it get to be 15 months already?

In other news: as I mentioned on facebook already, the way to get your gardening done is to let your kids watch "Holes" and point them in the right direction. They (mostly DS2, who's almost 7) dug a hole for one of our live Christmas trees. It only took five months. Oh, and I still have one in a pot that has looked worse and worse every year for the last.... 4 or 5 years.

Next is the little bed I have for vegetables, which is totally choked by stupid bermuda/buffalo/whatever grass. Maybe i can get them to dig it up and toss the grass on the compost. I'll need to dig the compost myself, I guess...

I am trying to write a scene that's been in my head for ages, but am not getting it to come out right. However, I had decided that I would get to 25K words for this month and am only 900-ish words away from that. I would also like to finish the rough rough draft of this novel in the next few days, but we'll see. Maybe before school is out for summer on the 10th. At that time, I'll dive into edits on the older novel and try to get that to flow. And then.... well, maybe some day I'll be brave enough to send off some query letters? Yikes.

Right. break's over. So's the writing, because DD is hollering for me.

PS. I forgot to say - I did a load of light-colored clothes and managed to get a brand new red bandana in it. And what got pink splotches? DS1's karate uniform, of course! Couldn't be something expendable like the old towel or the polo shirt that's missing buttons and developing holes. SIGH. I already soaked the spots with detergent and left them to soak ina bit of water overnight and used a tiny bit of bleach. They're still there. I'd go find some of the dye remover stuff, but I don't know if that would ruin the silkscreening on the back (the name of the karate school)

another way that kids mess with your libido

I was trying to write a love scene when the baby woke up. i fed her, changed her, took care of her, got her another cracker, etc etc.

Now I am trying to write again and she has brought a stepstool all the way down the hall and is trying to bang on the keyboard with a pen.

They even interrupt imaginary nookie.

Sigh.

ETA: Well, I did manage to write almost 1000 words, even with help. Just getting to the really good parts, and I can't concentrate. My new workout program, when I spend about an hour of a two hour nap going to Curves, then another 15 minutes showering, is really playing havoc with my writing time.

Anyway, I have some errands to do before getting the boys, so i should go do those.
